Smooth organisation of first- and last-mile transport plays an increasingly important role in the efficient operation of intermodal terminals. Operators today expect not only full control over processes taking place within the terminal area, but also the ability to track the road transport that precedes and concludes rail transport. Modern TOS (Terminal Operating System) solutions developed by OLTIS Polska are the answer to these needs.

One such example of this approach is the implementation carried out at the Schavemaker Invest terminal, featuring functions that integrate terminal services with GPS monitoring, process visualisation, and the management of first- and last-mile transport. The goal of the project is to create a comprehensive work environment that ensures full transparency of logistics processes and enables even more efficient operational planning.

One system – full process control

One of the most important directions in TOS development is the integration of operational data with visualisation tools and GPS monitoring. As a result, users can track the real-time status of the terminal on an interactive map, including the position of transport units, storage space occupancy, heavy goods vehicle movements, and ongoing handling operations.

Integration with vehicle-mounted GPS devices enables real-time location tracking both on the road and within the terminal premises. Operations staff and dispatchers thus gain complete overview of the transport process – from the start of the journey, through terminal handling, right up to delivery to the end customer.

The system also allows transport status tracking, access to transport documentation, generating notifications, and rapid information exchange between drivers and dispatchers. As a result, all the most important data is available in one place and can be used to make real-time operational decisions.

Traffic monitoring and optimisation of traffic in the terminal

The solution supports continuous vehicle monitoring and journey history analysis. The system collects detailed data on GPS location, speed, stops, and driver activity. Furthermore, using the mobile application allows the start and end of individual transport stages to be recorded, as well as automatically calculating dwell times.

Users further benefit from filters, reports, and charts displaying key operational metrics. This enables quick analysis of mileage, transport times, and utilisation of available resources.

First- and last-mile support

In intermodal logistics, the efficient management of road transport before and after rail transport is becoming increasingly important. Integrating the TOS with telematics solutions brings the entire process under control – from transport planning and progress tracking to final cargo delivery at its destination.

This approach enables terminal operators to better coordinate the activities of all actors in the logistics chain, reduce delays, and improve customer service quality. The range of displayed data and features can be tailored to the operator’s specific requirements and the nature of their operations.

Development of the system in practice

It should be highlighted that the implementation carried out at the Schavemaker Invest terminal is a phased project developed in close collaboration between the terminal operator’s teams and specialists from OLTIS Polska. Experience from this type of projects shows that the true value of new features only becomes apparent after a period of daily operational use.

It is precisely through practical application that one can evaluate which solutions best support operational processes and which can be further refined. Many needs and ideas for future development emerge during actual system use by dispatchers, operators, and drivers. Implementation, therefore, does not end at making the solution operational. It is a process of continuous improvement requiring commitment, open communication, and a collaborative partnership from both sides.

Thanks to this approach, it is possible to progressively build a tool that increasingly meets user needs and supports efficient first- and last-mile transport management. The project undertaken at the Schavemaker Invest terminal is an example of how combining the customer’s operational expertise with the experience of the OLTIS Polska team enables the creation of solutions tailored to the real challenges of modern intermodal logistics.
